The Top 5 Wonderkids In Football!

Hello everyone! Today’s article will be my list of who I think are the top 5 wonderkids in football right now! Just to be clear, the definition of wonderkid when it comes to football is any player aged 21 and under who looks set for stardom. Unfortunately that means players like Leroy Sane and Dele Alli won’t make this list. Maybe I’ll have to put together a different article for players their age! With that being said, let’s get into this. Here are the top 5 wonderkids in football.

#5- Joao Felix, Forward, SL Benfica

Beating out the likes of Marcus Rashford, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Vinicius Junior is the Portuguese starlet, Joao Felix. Benfica’s wonderkid was still wearing braces months ago, being only 19 years old. Now he looks set to be joining Atletico Madrid for an absurd transfer fee. Rumor has it that Felix will be sold to Atletico for €120 million Euros! Incredible on the ball and in front of goal, Felix tallied 15 goals and nine assists in 26 league matches. His price rumored price tag will bring added pressure if he makes the switch. However, Felix looks like a player more than capable of achieving expectations.

#4- Matthijs de Ligt, Center-back, Ajax

The youngest captain in Ajax history comes in at number four. One of the best defending prospects in years, de Ligt has Dutch fans drooling over the thought of himself and Virgil van Dijk starting for Holland as their center back pairing. De Ligt had a fantastic 2018/19 season. He started in 55 matches for the club, scoring an impressive 11 times. However, his crowning achievement has to be guiding Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals. De Ligt led a team that no one expected to get much farther than the round of 16, within five seconds from the Champions League final. His future, and Holland’s looks very bright.

#3- Kai Havertz, Attacking Midfielder, Bayer Leverkusen

German “wunderkind” Kai Havertz nabs the third spot on my list. Quite frankly, I was very close to giving him the second place. Havertz was magnificent for Bayer Leverkusen last season. In 34 league matches, the German found the back of the net 17 times, from midfield! Add on his four assists in those 34 matches and you have quite the impressive return. Although he just turned 20 last week, Havertz already has three appearances with the German national team under his belt. Paired with teammates Leon Bailey and Paulinho, the future of Bayer Leverkusen looks very strong if they can hold onto their players.

#2- Jadon Sancho, Winger, Borussia Dortmund

After leaving Manchester City for just €7.5 million Euros in the summer of 2017, Sancho is now worth a whopping €90 million according to TransferMarkt. The Englishman’s blistering 2018/19 campaign may have something to do with that price tag. Sancho scored 12 goals while assisting an incredible 17 more in 34 league matches. His incredible leap in form allowed Dortmund to sell Pulisic without major worry that their results would dip. Sancho already has 6 appearances for the English national team and he only turned 19 this past March! The sky is the limit for this youngster.

#1- Kylian Mbappe, Forward, PSG

What else needs to be said? We all knew that Mbappe would be number one on this list. The Frenchman is already one of the best in the world. At 20 years old, he has already made 33 appearances for the French national side! This past season, Mbappe brushed aside opposing defenses with ease. In only 29 matches, he tallied 33 goals and nine assists. That’s a goal contribution every 70 minutes! I already wrote a feature piece on Mbappe a few months ago. The truth is, this young man has all the tools to go down as one of the best, if not the best players of all time.

That’s my list of the top 5 wonderkids in football today! Do you agree with my list? Did I miss someone? Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments and share this article if you enjoyed it! Thank you to Fredrik @F_edits for his great work again. The strange thing about creating a top 5 or top 10 list is that the number one guy is usually so highly publicized that it seems like he has been in the league for years and years. Mbappe is a phenomenal player and probably deserves the number one spot. It is just hard to believe that he is only 20 years old!
