Welcome back everyone! Today we will be looking at another European nation primed to push for the 2020 European Championship. The English National Team looks to be on the brink of contention for major silverware. If you are enjoying these Euro 2020 previews, let me know and I will get another one cranked out! With that being said, let’s get into this preview.
Every country that wants to contend for international titles has to have marquee players to help them push for trophies. England has more than enough stars to help them in that regard. Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are two players performing at a very high level right now for both club and country. All signs point to them continuing their hot form for Euro 2020. They can provide goals for the Three Lions as well as make those around them better. In midfield, the English can rely on Dele Alli and Jordan Henderson to bring a solid presence. Their surety on the field will help England weather any storm they may need to face.
Defense is always of high priority in major tournaments and England are no slouches in that regard. Harry Maguire made a name for himself at the 2018 World Cup with strong performances and goal scoring heroics. Kyle Walker brings the ability to play both on the right and middle of the defense which helps any team. John Stones has quietly gone about putting critics to rest over his abilities. Under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Stones has grown in confidence and skill. He is a vital part of the English backline.I n between the sticks, Jordan Pickford performed exceptionally at Russia during the World Cup. However, he has faltered as of late with Everton and will look to regain his form.
Having players that may not be the most well-known but can be counted on night in and night out is another major part of building an international contender. England has players who can step in at every position on the field in the absence of their main starters. Harry Kane has just gone down with an injury while playing with Tottenham and if that were to happen at Euro 2020 all hope wouldn’t be lost. Marcus Rashford can step in and lead the attack for the Three Lions, not to mention Callum Wilson who is playing well for Bournemouth this season.
The midfield has wild cards and consistent performers alike to fill the bench. Players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and James Maddison are all up and coming with a desire to stake their claim with the national team. James Milner, Jack Wilshere, and Adam Lallana bring a veteran presence that cannot be understated in the middle of the park.
The defense and goalkeeper positions are also strong in number. Ashley Young and Luke Shaw are consistent performers every time they play outside back for the English national team. Chris Smalling and Nathaniel Clyne also provide steady performances and have gotten better as their careers have progressed. Eric Dier is another vital player for the Three Lions. He is able to shift from center midfield to center back as required and has played across the park for England. At keeper, England has Jack Butland and Nick Pope as younger options, like Pickford. If they prefer a more seasoned player, Ben Foster, Tom Heaton, or Joe Hart are also available.
This is the part of the English team that has myself as a neutral fan most excited for. England is LOADED with wonder-kids that by Euro 2020, will be potential major factors in the squad. Starting from the back this time, England probably won’t stray away from Pickford or Butland, but if they decide to go a different direction, 22 year old Angus Gunn stands ready in the wings. Gunn has been the number one keeper for Southampton this season and has turned in numerous solid performances. Across the backline, the Three Lions have talents like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Max Aarons, Reece James and Ben Chillwell ready to play either left or right-back. The center-back position has Joe Gomez, Fikayo Tomori, Dael Fry, and Axel Tuanzebe. All of these prospects could become staples in the England team in the near future.
In the midfield and attack, England is more than blessed as well. The central midfield positions have young talents like Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Mason Mount, and Harry Winks ready to step into larger roles. Down the wings is where some of the most well known English wonder-kids are making names for themselves. Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi are the two big names that jump out as they are 18 and 17 respectively and have already appeared for England. However, there are other players more than capable of contributing at Euro 2020, despite their age. Ryan Sessegnon and Reiss Nelson are two additional young talents, ready to grab their chance. At striker, England has a few talents who may need to wait for their chance with Harry Kane as the #1 option. With that being said, look out for Tammy Abraham, Mason Greenwood, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin down the road.
This may be a part of a squad that is overlooked, but having a battle-tested manager is a huge benefit for England. Gareth Southgate was not the most popular choice when he was named manager before the 2018 World Cup. However, he won fans over by playing attacking, dynamic football. He helped lead England to the World Cup semi-finals, proving many skeptics wrong. By Euro 2020, Southgate will be more than ready for his next international tournament as manager. Now that he has the experience at the biggest stage, I don’t doubt his ability to lead England deep into the tourney in 2020.
