It’s time to get into the next position for my Top 5 lists! Today we will be taking a look at the top 5 right-backs in the world! In the past this position has produced some incredible names. Legends like Cafu, Javier Zanetti, Maicon, and Philipp Lahm made themselves known at the position. Now it is time for the next generation to claim their place as the best and brightest. So let’s get into it! Here is my list for the Top 5 right-backs in the world as of now! (Disclaimer: This list was TOUGH to write! Feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments!)
#5- Kyle Walker, Manchester City
One of the most expensive defensive signings ever, Kyle Walker has backed that price tag up by landing on this list. The English fullback can stifle opposing attacks with his combination of strength and speed. Pep Guardiola’s work with cannot be understated as Walker has developed technically as a player under Pep’s leadership. Walker had a very good World Cup this past summer for England and he brought the momentum back with him. His solid play and high energy help Manchester City dominate their opponents every time they take the field.
#4- Joao Cancelo, Juventus
The Portuguese defender has been flying recently and his great form gets him a spot on this list. His pace is what makes him so great as he flies around the pitch. An argument can be made that he has the best dribbling skills of any right-back in the world. He’s able to take on many players and beat them off the dribble and then fly around them with his incredible speed. On top of that, he pushes the counter attack for a Juventus team that has been on a roll this season. If Cancelo continues to play at the level he is currently, he could be #1 very soon!
#3- Joshua Kimmich, FC Bayern
The young German, Joshua Kimmich takes the third spot on my list. Many people believe he belongs either first or second so let me explain myself. Kimmich has slid a little bit recently and many of those issues arose at the World Cup this past summer. Germany exited the in the group stage after winning the tournament in 2014. Many of their players played poorly and Kimmich was no exception. Thankfully, Kimmich has found success playing in the midfield for his club, FC Bayern. It remains to be seen whether or not he may move positions permanently. This is because he is not a traditional defender given his notable abilities in the attack. At only 23 years old I expect Kimmich to build on his recent success and move past his struggles to establish himself as one of the best players in the world.
#2- Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea FC
Underrated and under appreciated, Azpilicueta or “Dave” as Chelsea fans call him, has been the mark of consistency for his club for years now. The Spaniard’s constant solid play and great attitude have made him a mainstay in the Chelsea starting lineup for about five years now. Calm, cool, and collected in defense, Azpilicueta rarely makes a mistake and is often the player making a crucial block to stop a goal scoring opportunity. His long passes and ability to dissect opposing pressure makes him invaluable in manager Maurizio Sarri’s possession based style of play. Not enough people talk about how solid Azpilicueta has been for Chelsea, but I’m willing to give him the respect he deserves.
#1- Dani Carvajal, Real Madrid
The Spanish defender is an absolute joy to watch on the pitch. His ability to constantly run for the full 90 minutes is remarkable. Another player whose consistency cannot be understated, Carvajal brings a veteran presence to Real Madrid and his dribbling and passing help him push into the attack as an extra member. Carvajal is one of the best right-backs in the world when he is healthy. He works constantly for his side, winning back possession, starting counter attacks and pushing up the wing to put in a cross. Not known for being a showoff as a player, Carvajal goes out and does his job night in and night out which puts him at number one on my list.
Do you agree with my list? This was a challenging one to write! Are these the top 5 right-backs in the world? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments and share this post!
