Top 5 Goalkeepers in the World!

Welcome to a new series here at Top Footy Talk! This series will be looking at Top 5 lists of players at all 11 positions on the field. What better place to start than at the bottom of every formation with the best goalkeepers! There are so many great ones around the world, I know that this will be tough to narrow down. Without further ado, here are the Top 5 goalkeepers in the world right now!

#5- Marc-André ter Stegen, FC Barcelona

Ter Stegen is a brilliant keeper but he is prone to the occasional mistake. When he is playing at his highest level, he is among the most elite players in the world. Those errors however have him tied to the bottom of this list, which is nothing to sneeze at. The German goalie has begun to push Manuel Neuer out of the starting job for the German national team. His ability is truly world class he just needs to leave the careless mistakes in his past to move up my list.

#4- Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid

A recent rough patch has the Belgian shot stopper sliding down my list. However, he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the business. A fair amount of goals that have been scored on him are the fault of poor defending but Courtois is capable of more. His lanky 6’6″ frame helps him take up a lot of space and intimidate opposing attackers. He made a name for himself on loan from Chelsea at Atletico Madrid as a youngster and has only gotten better from there. I fully expect Courtois to climb this list as he gets settled in at Real.

#3- Samir Handanovič, Inter Milan

I believe that Handanovič is criminally underrated. The Serie A isn’t always considered as high level as La Liga or the Premier League but that shouldn’t hamper The Hand as he is known. He leads the major 5 European leagues with an 83% save rate, which is fantastic. Another positive is that he doesn’t seem to make any head scratching mistakes and at 33 years old, has an amazing head on his shoulders. He hasn’t gotten the respect he deserves and I believe #3 is the recognition he deserves.

#2- David De Gea, Manchester United

De Gea is number one for many people, but as you all know I like to be a little controversial. This past summer’s World Cup was a nightmare for the Spanish goal keeper. In comparison to Handanovič’s 83% save rate for Inter Milan, De Gea’s save rate was a miserable at 14.3%. He stopped 1 shot out of the 7 on target he faced all tournament. However, the Spaniard is much better than that World Cup showed. I think he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and is a sliver away from being #1. He is one of the main reasons for the success of Man United and Jose Mourinho owes him many thanks for him still being De Gea’s manager today.

#1- Jan Oblak, Atletico Madrid

Sometimes the best offense is great defense. This is the case for Atletico Madrid. Manager Diego Simeone believes the most important part of any team is the defense. Jan Oblak is the anchor for this Atletico side and is definitely under appreciated in my opinion. Last season Oblak kept 21 clean sheets for Atletico in 34 league games. He only gave up 18 goals last year and averaged roughly 2.5 saves per game. The Slovenian is a fantastic keeper and should near of the top of any list in regards to being the best.

So what do you think of my top 5 goalkeepers in the world? Are there any goalkeepers that I missed or aren’t in the right place? Feel free to let me know in the comments and don’t forget to share and subscribe! Have a great day! (Thank you to Fredrik @F_edits for the great Ter Stegen design!)
