The Resurgence of Borussia Dortmund?

One of the many reasons that football is called “the beautiful game” is for it’s unpredictability. Fairy tale teams like Leicester City defy the critics and the odds to reach heights no one thought they could. I’m not calling Borussia Dortmund a fairy tale by any stretch of the imagination, but what they are doing so far this season is incredibly impressive. They currently sit in first place in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Dortmund has always been a very good side, if not great. But recently Bayern Munich has been the German team to dominate the headlines. Bayern wins the Bundesliga every year and is almost always the last team from the Bundesliga to be left standing in the Champions League. So what has been behind this resurgence of Borussia Dortmund? Let’s break it down into three reasons.

#1- Goals, Goals, GOALS!

In eleven games this season, Dortmund has found the back of the net 35 times. 35. That’s a three and five. Yeah that is a lot of goals. The main scoring culprit is new signing, Paco Alcacer. The former Barcelona striker has found the back of the net eight times in five matches for his new team. That is an unreal goals to games ratio at any position. Alcacer isn’t doing it by himself either. Electric attackers, Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, and American wonderkid Christian Pulisic are driving the team forward and creating so many chances. Opponents are simply overwhelmed with the attacking talent Dortmund possesses.

#2- Exceptional Youth

This is Dortmund’s calling card. They crank out youth prospects like there is no tomorrow. I’ve actually highlighted quite a few of their young stars in my youth talent articles! What makes Dortmund different is their willingness to trust the young players in big moments. Clubs like Chelsea put so much pressure on their managers that they are almost afraid to give the youth a chance because it may hurt their results. At Dortmund, it is almost expected that as a manager the youngsters get a chance. It’s such a positive culture and it’s clear that it’s paying off.

Young stars like Jadon Sancho and Christian Pulisic are so fun to watch as they attack down the wings and rack up the goals and assists. Nineteen year old Dan-Axel Zagadou has become a large part of the team as an anchor in the defense and looks like a future stud. These youngsters are playing huge roles in this Dortmund team as they bring so much energy and excitement, which is exactly what they are doing this year.

#3- Great Transfer Business

Another Dortmund staple is their brilliant transfer business. They are known around the world for purchasing young talent at a bargain price and then developing them into stars. This years business has been no different. The signing of Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel has paid massive dividends so far for Dortmund. He has been the maestro of their midfield, scoring goals and creating multiple chances. Striker Paco Alcacer is a loan signing who has come over for barely anything and will now look to add him permanently after his fantastic displays this season. The scouts at Dortmund know their players and are doing a great job bringing in talent to the side.

What do you make of Dortmund’s run? Is it a flash in the pan or will they maintain it? Let me know in the comments and don’t forget to share and subscribe! Until next time God bless!
