2018-19 Ligue 1 Predictions (Final Part!)

Hello and welcome back to Ligue 1 predictions! We will be wrapping up this set of predictions with the final six teams and crowning our pick as champion!

6th Place- OGC Nice

Young manager Patrick Viera inherits a side that sold off two of their top players in Jean Michael Seri and Alassane Plea. However his side has its fair share of young talent and I expect a respectable finish for Nice this year. Polarizing striker Mario Balotelli will look to continue rebuilding his career after a strong 26 goal campaign last season. Promising center back Malang Sarr anchors a back line with a point to prove after sales of multiple defenders this summer. I expect Nice to start slow and finish with a flourish this season under new management.

5th Place- AS Saint-Etienne

Consistency is often overlooked but Saint-Etienne is hoping that it plays into their favor this season. A summer without many large signings or sales has the team looking very similar to last season. In a league as chaotic as Ligue 1, I see this playing into their favor. Under-appreciated goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier will continue to be a solid choice between the sticks. I look at Saint-Etienne as a team in solid position to build off of their 7th place finish last year and grab a top 5 spot.

4th Place- AS Monaco

Positions 2-4 this season in France are so hard to predict in my opinion. This season I see Monaco slipping from their 2nd place finish last year to 4th. This is largely due to their massive amounts of activity in the transfer window this summer. Sales of star players like Thomas Lemar and Fabinho can’t be replaced overnight. Their absence will definitely felt even with the signing of Russian talent Alexander Golovin and the 16 year old French sensation Willem Geubbels. I see the starting blocks definitely tripping Monaco up this season in their pursuit of a high league table finish.

3rd Place- Olympique Marseille

With Monaco slipping from 2nd to 4th in my predictions, I see Marseille moving up this season. One big sale of midfielder Andre Franck Zambo Anguissa (What a name!), was immediately offset by the signing of Kevin Strootman from Roma. A solid team across all aspects of the field, look for Florian Thauvin to stand out with his play this season. Dimitri Payet will also be looking to have a strong season this year to put his name back into contention for the French national team. Watch out for Marseille this year as I believe they will be quite strong.

2nd Place- Olympique Lyon

In a league that has been dominated by the wealthy giants PSG, Lyon is the best shot to take them down. Loaded to the gills with young talent and experienced veterans this team looks dangerous. In fact many of the sales they made were simply due to the reason that they had too many quality players at their positions. The midfield looks especially deadly with wonderkids Houssem Aouar and Tanguy Ndombele starring alongside Nabil Fekir. New striker Moussa Dembele will look to continue smashing in the goals to push this team up the table.

1st Place- Paris Saint-Germain

Even with multiple sales, Paris Saint-Germain or PSG is almost everyone’s choice for first this season. With the likes of Neymar, Cavani and Mbappe driving at defenses expect another 100+ goals this season from the Parisians. Legendary goalkeeper Gianuigi Buffon joins the side looking to win that elusive Champions League title. Although the team made a few large sales this window their absences won’t even be felt. I expect PSG to breeze to another league title this season.
