Here is part 2 of the Ligue 1 predictions! Feel free to leave thoughts in the comments!
13th Place- Nimes Olympique
Nimes finished second place in Ligue 2 last season with 73 points. They didn’t make any big signings or sales this transfer window and for them it has been very quiet and uneventful to say the least. They did bring in Denis Bouanga from FC Lorient in Ligue 2. With him upgrading their left midfield slot they could form a solid attack force. Last season they scored an astounding 75. Nimes manager Bernard Balquart started with the team in 2015 and has now sorted them into a Ligue 1 caliber team.
12th Place- Stade Reims
Stade Reims finished top of the Ligue 2 table last year comfortably. Their team does not have any real star players, but as unit are an solid team. What makes me believe this team will finish mid table this season is simply their team play and determination to say in the top tier of French football. They haven’t had any expensive sales, but brought in the left back Ghislain Konan from Vitoria Guimaraes in the Portuguese league. This could make for a better defense than their Ligue 2 winning defense last year.
11th Place- RC Strasbourg
Strasbourg was near the bottom of the table last year in fifteenth, and not much has changed this year. With the unpredictable Ligue 1, I have them finishing higher than last season despite losing a vital piece of their midfield to Monaco in Jean-Eudes Aholou. I would expect them to edge out 12+ wins with a low margin of victory. Manager Thierry Laurey is an experienced player and now coach, and I think that he will be a huge factor in some of their victories.
10th Place- FC Nantes
Nantes finished ninth last season which was a very solid finish for them. I think that they will be very similar to last year. Losing left midfielder Anthony Limbombe will hurt the team. However a key player for Nantes is Adrien Thomasson from Strasbourg. Thomasson, the left midfielder was a great player for Strasbourg and it looks like he will continue that as he starts his career with Nantes. This team could place anywhere from 7th-13th in my opinion.
9th Place- FC Girondins Bordeaux
Last season Bordeaux placed very well with a six place finish. Unfortunately for them star right winger Malcolm was sold to Barcelona for just under $48 million. Losing their best player will really hurt them, but I think that they will still get a top ten finish. This is due to the fact that they have managed to find a solid replacement for Malcolm in Samuel Kalu from the Belgian league. The 20 year old wonder kid looks to be a great fit for the position. Even so, I think that they will slip a few places from last season’s sixth place finish.
8th Place- HSC Montpelier
Montpelier doesn’t make my top six teams, because they lost their two starting full backs. The two being Nordi Mukiele and Jerome Roussillon. These two were a real vital piece to the defense. Montpelier sold both of them into the German league. This will definitely make their team weaker, but Montpelier’s veteran manager Michel Der Zakarian will most likely be able to bring this team back nearly as strong as the past season and have them ready to make a push up the league table.
7th Place- Stade Rennes
Rennes had an astounding 5th place finish last season. Unfortunately, their rock in their defense, Joris Gnagnon was sold to Sevilla FC in La Liga. This will make it very tough for Rennes to string together another top five finish. With their defense taking a hit, they have signed a new striker for their side named Jordan Siebatcheu. The 22 year old from Reims was a quality player for them, and he looks to continue that with Rennes this upcoming season. Another solid signing for Rennes was Clement Grenier from Guingamp and he looks to secure that central midfield for them.
